Evaluating information... Other considerations--personal pages |

| Evaluating Information
from the World Wide Web:
Need to evaluate
|
Many web sites offer their members space on their servers to post personal web pages. Many college and university web pages, designated with an .edu ending, offer space to their faculty and students as well. Whenever you see a tilde ~ in a webpage, this is a clue that the content, even if at a legitimate site, belongs to an individual poster. Many other personal pages do not employ tildes so you can't always count on that for a clue. That is not to say that personal pages are always bad (in fact, many of them are very good) but this is another trigger to critically evaluate the information. Ask yourself the following questions: Is it clear who is responsible for the information? Does the person indicate their subject expertise or credentials for writing on the subject? Is the information provided as a service of a sponsoring organization? |
