Make sure that when you write your paper that you give credit to others' words and ideas by citing those works.  What do you need to cite?

  • Cite exact copies of others' words by placing quote marks (" ") around the original and providing a parenthetical footnote; obviously the work referred to in the parenthetical footnote will be on your works cited page or bibliography.

  • example of quoting an exact copy of original words and a parenthetical footnote:

According to Barton, "Abraham Lincoln had never remembered the time when he did not believe slavery to be wrong.  From the time that he saw slaves chained and sold in the New Orleans market, he had felt some measure of moral accountability for a system which prevailed in his country and which his conscience condemned" (335).

  • example of citing in a works cited page according to the MLA format:

Barton, William E.  The Life of Abraham Lincoln.  Vol. 1.  Indianapolis:
The Bobbs Merrill Company Publishers, 1925.
