MC Course Reserves & E-Reserves
Guidelines, Procedures and Copyright for Faculty
Request Forms When submitting
materials that are owned by the
library or are owned by you
personally (personal
copies), please bring a completed
Course Reserves
request form to the library at the time you
submit the items to be placed on Course Reserves.
Reference and other restricted materials (including bound and
unbound periodicals) are not eligible for Course Reserves
since they are always
available for use in the library.
If you have an item in an
electronic format (including PowerPoint presentations, word
documents, online journal articles or websites) you can submit the
form and the attached file via email using the appropriate campus
reserve desk email address.
Loan Periods
Most
loan periods for hard copy materials are one hour but this may vary
according to faculty request. Please advise your students that they must present a current Montgomery
College photo I.D. card to use Reserve materials that are located in the
library. Materials are
primarily restricted to in-house library use. Those items placed on
Electronic Reserves do
not have a set loan period but students must login if they are off campus.
Periodicals
Entire issues of periodicals will not be placed on
Reserve.
However, individual articles may be photocopied or scanned for
E-Reserves. In addition, if an article is available in one of our
electronic databases, we can place a
persistent link or digital object
identifier (DOI) in the E-Reserve system for your students to access.

Principles & Procedures for Placing Materials on Course Reserves
& E-Reserves
-
The
request to place materials on Reserves will initiate with the faculty who are
expected to apply the principles of Fair Use. All uses will be
non-commercial and for educational purposes only.
-
Copies
to be placed on Reserve, Xeroxed, or scanned should be owned by either the
Libraries or by the faculty members themselves.
-
Some
scanned documents will be in pdf format. Therefore, you will need to
download a free copy of the
Adobe Acrobat Reader
if you don't already have this application.
-
Personal copies may be placed on Reserve. Please identify and label all
personal components you want placed on Reserve:
Example: Last Name of Instructor, Course, Title of Item, #

-
Personal items may be marked with a Montgomery College stamp and
a security
tag. If you do not wish your items to be marked, please
let us know.

Please bring print copies to the Circulation Desk of your campus library.
Electronic documents can also be submitted to in Word, PDF, PowerPoint, Excel or by any
other College-supported software OR by a
persistent link or other digital object identifier(DOI).
-
The
amount of the work to be placed on Reserve will be taken into consideration
when deciding whether an item falls within fair use. Longer works will not be
placed on reserve without obtaining copyright clearance or the permission of
the copyright holder.
-
Items
in the public domain, those copyrighted before 1923 or produced by the
U.S. Federal government or works licensed under the
Creative
Commons agreement, can be placed on reserve without consideration
of Fair Use.
-
A
notice of copyright will appear on all physical materials places on reserve
and an electronic statement of copyright will appear on all electronic reserve
items.
-
Access
to reserve materials is limited to the faculty and students of Montgomery
College. Remote users will be required to login with a username and password.
If you want additional protection on your documents so that only your current
students can access your items, please notify us on the
form so we can provide additional password
protection for these documents.
-
Reserve materials, including electronic reserves, will be removed each
semester at the end of the semester. If faculty wish to use the same
materials again in subsequent semesters, copyright clearance or the permission
of the copyright holder must be obtained for each instance of use.
