 Information for Faculty

 Print & Non-Print Orders
The libraries welcome faculty suggestions for books, films, and
periodicals. Let us know of either specific titles that will be useful to
your students or of subject areas that you plan to focus on in future
assignments so that we can be sure our collection will meet your
 students’ needs.

Because the ordering and cataloging process can take up to eight weeks
or more, please let us know as far in advance as possible. Our materials
budget is used primarily to meet the needs of students; for your own
professional interests, especially at a reading level of graduate or above,
 we suggest using Interlibrary Loan.

For more information or to suggest a book or film:

In Germantown, call or e-mail Metta Lash, 240-567-7857.
In Rockville, call or e-mail Beth Thoms, 240-567-7128.
In Rockville, film requests should be sent to Abi Sogunro
at 240-567-7114.
In Takoma Park/Silver Spring, call or e-mail Mark Miller, 240-567-1538.
For the School of Art + Design, contact Kate Cooper
at 240-567-5812.

For more information or to suggest a periodical:

Suggestions for periodicals can be made to Nancy Nyland at Germantown, Jay Sambasivan at Rockville, or Beverly Lehrer at Takoma Park/Silver Spring.

Online forms are available for recommending materials as well.

For more information or to suggest an electronic resource:

Suggestions for electronic resources or databases can be made to Brenda Braham, Digital Initiatives Librarian at Rockville.  240-567-8033.

  Interlibrary Loan
The libraries can obtain needed materials from other libraries for faculty,
staff, and students through the interlibrary loan service. ILL forms are
available at the circulation or reference desk at each campus library.

Online forms are also available for requesting materials through interlibrary
  loan.

Every attempt is made to obtain material free of charge, but when this is
not possible charges may range from $1 to approximately $25. Interlibrary
loan requests are submitted and maintained at the Rockville Campus
Library.  For additional information, call 240-567-7118 or e-mail
  ILL@montgomerycollege.edu.

 Developing Research Assignments For Students
Reference librarians are available to help instructors develop assignments
that make use of library resources. We can verify that the library has the
materials necessary to complete an assignment, or we can give you
suggestions for assignments that will best match the library’s resources in
the subject area you are teaching.

To use this service:

In Germantown, call or e-mail Diane Cockrell, 240-567-7849.
In Rockville, call or e-mail Abi Sogunro, 240-567-7114.
In Takoma Park/Silver Spring, call or e-mail Kathy Swanson at 240-567-1537.
For the School of Art + Design, call or e-mail Kate Cooper at 240-567-5812.

 Library Instruction Classes
A library instruction session helps students get a good start on any
assignment requiring library or internet research. The classes take place
during a class period in the IT Training Center located at each campus
library. A librarian can demonstrate the use of the library’s online databases
for locating books and periodical articles and the use of the World Wide
Web. Since most students will have a computer to work on in the
classroom, a large part of the class time can be spent in individual
research, with a librarian and the class’s instructor available for assistance.

Classes should be scheduled at least a week in advance. The best
time for a library instruction session is two to three weeks before the
 class’s assignment is due.

To arrange for a library instruction session:

In Germantown, call or e-mail Diane Cockrell, 240-567-7849.
In Rockville, call or e-mail Abi Sogunro, 240-567-7114.
In Takoma Park/Silver Spring, call or e-mail Kathy Swanson, 240-567-1537.

For the School of Art + Design, call or e-mail Kate Cooper at 240-567-5812

Online forms are available for requesting instruction as well.

 In-Library Classes & Online Tutorials
Another way to help your students research a topic is to bring the class
to the library to work on an assignment during a class period. Students
then have access to all the materials in the library as well as the assistance
of their instructor and a librarian. Please schedule with the reference desk
ahead of time so that we can be sure only one class is meeting in the
 library at a time.

Another option is to have your students go through the web-based
library tutorials on their own time outside of class.  The modules include
assessments and can be used if you wish to give your students extra
credit.  Students submit their assessments electronically which are then
 forwarded to the instructor.

To schedule an in-library class:

In Germantown, call the reference desk at 240-567-7853.
In Rockville, call the reference desk at 240-567-7130.
In Takoma Park/Silver Spring, call the reference desk at 240-567-1536.
For the School of Art + Design, call or e-mail Kate Cooper at 240-567-5812

 Reserve Materials
You may place on reserve any item which you want to make available to
all or most of your students. This includes library books, photocopies of
periodical articles (subject to copyright restrictions), audiotapes,
videotapes, copies of past tests, and sample student papers. Students
then can use the item in the library for one hour at a time.  In many cases,
we can make electronic copies or provide persistent link URL's to articles
and other items through our electronic Course Reserves.

Bring materials to the reserve desk in advance of the date students will be
working on the assignment. Allow one week for processing at the
beginning of the semester. After the third week of classes, two days are
usually sufficient. To ensure that materials are ready early in the semester,
they may be placed on reserve before the semester begins.

For additional Reserves information contact:

In Germantown, call or e-mail Judy Leep, 240-567-1973.
In Rockville, call or e-mail Ruby Haider, 240-567-7124.
In Takoma Park/Silver Spring, call or e-mail Helena Seward, 240-567-1539.
For the School of Art + Design, call or e-mail Kate Cooper at 240-567-5812.

 Copyright Guidelines for Reserve Materials
The MC Libraries have a new Course Reserves/E-Reserves system.
For in depth information on placing materials on reserve, please go there.
You will also find online forms and guidance on copyright.  The guidelines
offered below are only guidelines and do not have the force of law.  We are
using the principles of Fair Use when deciding what to place on reserve.
In general, it is better to obtain permission from copyright holders when
 placing items on reserve.

One photocopy of any article from a periodical, of a chapter of a book,
or of a poem or essay from a book may be placed on reserve provided the
photocopied material does not exceed 10% of the book or periodical
and provided the photocopies contain a notice of copyright.

If more than one copy of a given article, chapter, etc., is to be placed
on reserve, the following additional guidelines are to be met:

  • No more than five copies will be placed on reserve.

  • The copies will be placed on reserve for only one semester. Copyright permission is to be sought if the same material is to be placed on reserve for more than one semester.

  • The effect of photocopying must not be detrimental to the market for the work. In general, the library should own at least one copy of the work. The duplication of works that are designed to be filled in or completed by the student, such as exercises and workbooks, normally requires permission from the copyright owner.  Check the copyright statement of these works.

For more information on copyright, see the Copyright tutorial
on the library's web page and see the Fair Use guidelines on the
Course Reserve
page.
