American Journal of Nursing (AJN)

The American Journal of Nursing (AJN) is one of the nursing profession's foremost publications and is the official journal of the American Nurses' Association.

How can I access the AJN?

Current Montgomery College students, faculty, & staff can access databases from on or off-campus. To access the American Journal of Nursing:
  • Start at the Montgomery College Library home page: www.montgomerycollege.edu/library

  • Click on Databases by Subject. Scroll down the screen to the Nursing/Health category and click on AJN: American Journal of Nursing.

  • Off-campus or using a laptop on-campus: When you click on the link to the database, you will be asked to log in. Enter your Montgomery College ID ("M number," including the M) in the box. Problems logging in? Try the tips in our Troubleshooting Checklist.

How do I search the AJN?

The AJN offers several different ways of searching but defaults to the Basic Search.

  • Basic Search: Type your keywords or a phrase in the search box (e.g., nutrition mothers prenatal). Click on the word Limits below the search box to find a specific kind of article (e.g., Review article) or search within a specific date range.

  • Find Citation: Search for a specific article from the American Journal of Nursing. Enter as much information as you have in the search boxes.

  • Search Fields: Search within specific parts of AJN article records (e.g., abstract).

  • Advanced Ovid Search: Search for articles using keywords, and, & or (e.g., prenatal and malnutrition and mother). You can also search for articles by a certain author or for words in an article's title. Use a $ at the end of a word to search for variations (e.g., mother$ = mother, mothers, motherhood). Set Limits in the same way as for the Basic Search.

How can I see the articles from my search?

After you click search, a list of articles will appear on the screen. You have several options for viewing the articles.

  • Abstract or View Abstract: Read a summary of the article.

  • Complete Reference: Displays the full database record for the article.

  • Table of Contents: Displays the Table of Contents for the entire issue of AJN that the article is from.

  • Ovid Full Text: Displays the full article as a web page. To view the article as a PDF, click Full Text (PDF) on the right-hand side of the screen.

How do I print or email an article?

Before you print or email an article, go to the Ovid Full Text screen for the article that you want.

You have two options for emailing an article:

  • To send a link to the article, click Email Jumpstart on the right-hand side of the screen.
  • To send the full text of the article, click Email Article Text above the AJN logo, near the top of the screen.

To print an article:

  • Click Print Preview above the AJN logo, near the top of the screen.
  • Select a graphic size and click Continue. This will reformat the article.
  • Use the File > Print menu in your Web browser to print the article.
  • Note: If you are printing the PDF version of the article, use the print icon directly above the article, not in your browser menu.
