Health Source: Nursing/Academic

Health Source: Nursing/Academic is a database that gives you access to scholarly articles from nursing, health-related, and medical journals. The companion database Health Source: Consumer provides access to health-related magazine and newspaper articles.

How do I access Health Source: Nursing/Academic?

Current Montgomery College students, faculty, & staff can access databases from on or off-campus. To access Health Source: Nursing/Academic:
  • Start at the Montgomery College Library home page: www.montgomerycollege.edu/library

  • Click on Databases by Subject. Click Health Source: Nursing/Academic under the Nursing/Health category.

  • Off-campus or using a laptop on-campus: When you click on the link to the database, you will be asked to log in. Enter your Montgomery College ID ("M number," including the M) in the box. Problems logging in? Try the tips in our Troubleshooting Checklist.


How do I search Health Source: Nursing/Academic?

The database will open to the Basic Search screen. You can select Advanced Search by clicking the blue tab above the green bar. Use the same methods to search in either the Basic or Advanced screen:
  • Keywords: To search Health Source: Nursing/Academic, choose several keywords that describe your topic. Enter them in the search box(es) with the connector words and & or. If you do not use and & or, the search will look for your words as a phrase (in the order you type them into the search box; e.g., high blood pressure).
    • AND: Combines search words so that the articles you get back contain all of the words you entered. Use and to connect the different ideas that you want the articles to discuss (e.g., stress and high blood pressure).

    • OR: Combines search words so that the articles you get back contain at least one of the words you entered. Use or when you are searching with synonyms, abbreviations, alternate spellings, or related terms (e.g. stress or anxiety). NOTE: In the Basic Search box, put words connected with or in parentheses: high blood pressure and (stress or anxiety). In the Advanced Search boxes, put the terms connected with or in the same search box.

  • Limiting Your Search: You can tell the database to search within a specific set of requirements or limits. To do this, use the options available below the Refine Search tab (below the search boxes). The more limits you apply to your search, the fewer articles you will retrieve.
    • Full-text: To only retrieve articles with full-text available, select the full-text option below the Refine Search tab.

    • Published Date: To specify a date range for the articles you retrieve, use the drop-down boxes to select the months. Enter the year with four digits (e.g., 2006). If you want to search within one month, enter the same dates in both boxes (e.g., September 2007 to September 2007).


How can I view my search results?

After you search, you will see a list of articles arranged in order by date, with the most recent article listed first. To see the article citation, abstract, and full-text (if available), click on the article's title. This will take you to the full record for the article. If you have searched for full-text articles, you will see a link to the PDF and/or HTML below the article citation on the results list. You can also access the full-text from the full record, either above or below the information about the article.

How can I print or e-mail articles?

Click on an article title and go to the full record page. You will see several links above the article title that give you the option to print, e-mail, and more.
  • Print: Clicking print on the record page will print the bibliographic information and HTML full text (if available). After you click print, you will see a new screen that asks you if you want to include the HTML. Click print within that screen to re-format the document. Then use the File > Print menu in your web browser.

  • Printing PDFs is different from printing HTML pages. Open the PDF by clicking the link on the record page. Click on the printer icon directly above the PDF document, then OK.

  • E-mail: Click e-mail on the record page. You will be asked if you want to include the HTML full text in the e-mail and/or send the PDF as an attachment. Enter your e-mail address & click Send.
