History Resource Center: U.S.

The History Resource Center: U.S. database is a collection of full-text journal, magazine, & newspaper articles, reference sources, and primary documents covering all areas of U.S. history from pre-colonial times to the present day.

How do I get to the History Resource Center: U.S.?

Current Montgomery College students, faculty, & staff can access databases from on or off-campus. To access the History Resource Center: U.S.
  • Start at the Montgomery College Library home page: http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/library

  • Click on Databases by Subject. Scroll down the screen to the History category and click on History Resource Center: U.S.

  • Off-campus or using a laptop on-campus: When you click on the link to the database, you will be asked to log in. Enter your Montgomery College ID ("M number," including the M) in the box. Problems logging in? Try the tips in our Troubleshooting Checklist.

How do I search the History Resource Center: U.S.?

You can search the History Resource Center: U.S. in several different ways: using basic or advanced search screens, by subject, by a person's name, or by using a chronology (timeline).

  • Basic Search: Allows you to do a quick search, but is not as specific. Enter your keywords into the basic search box on the History Resource Center: U.S. main page (e.g., immigration latin america). For U.S.-only results, be sure to select U.S. below the search box.

  • Advanced Search: Allows you to do a more specific search. Click the "Advanced" button on the main History Resource Center: U.S. screen or on the red menu bar at the top of the screen. Enter your keywords into the individual search boxes on the Advanced Search screen. For more specific results, limit the search by a time period or publication year.

  • Subject Search: Allows you to browse through a list of subjects/topics to find information. Click the "Subject" button on the main History Resource Center: U.S. screen or on the red menu bar at the top of the screen. Search Subjects with one or two words, and put the most important word first. You will see a list of subjects; click "See" to retrieve articles.

  • Person Search: Allows you to search by a person's name or occupation. Click the "Person" button on the main History Resource Center: U.S. screen or on the red menu bar at the top of the screen. Fill out the search form as completely as possible.

  • Chronology: Allows you to select topics by time period. Click on the picture that represents the range of time you want to study. Browse through the documents that relate to that era (they are arranged by date).


How do I look at different kinds of documents?

On all searches (except Chronology), results will be grouped into the following tabs. Click on each tab to see your search results:

The Chronology search will have tabs for Domestic Events and World View.


How can I print or email articles?

  • When you are viewing a document, look for the icons near the top-left corner of the screen.

  • To Print: Select the print icon. The article will be re-formatted for printing and will open in a new screen. Select File > Print from the browser menu to print.

  • To Email: Select the email icon. To send the article to yourself, type your email address in both the "Mail to" and "Sender's email address" boxes. Click Send.
