Use the Montgomery College Library Catalog to find books, CDs & audiocassettes, movies
(VHS or DVD), and paper copies of magazines and journals that are in
each campus Library.
How do I get to the Catalog?
Anyone can access the Montgomery College from on or
off-campus.
How do I search the Catalog?
There are many different ways to search the Library
Catalog. This guide will focus on the Basic Search
screen (the main screen that you see when you open the Catalog), but
other ways to search are: Advanced Search, Journal Titles, Course
Reserves, and New Books. To search the catalog using the Basic
Search screen:
- Select a Search Type before you
enter any keywords into the search box:
- Keyword Anywhere: Enter your keywords as
follows: +keyword +keyword. The list of results
will be ranked by relevance to your keywords. (e.g. +global
+warming)
- Keyword Boolean: Enter your keywords, using
and, or, & "phrases in quotes" to connect the search words.
(e.g., "global warming" and pollution)
- Title Begins With: Enter the first few words
of the title. (e.g., one earth to find the book One Earth, One
Future: Our Changing Global Environment)
- Title Contains: Enter some words from the
title, in order. (e.g., one future)
- Subject Keyword: Search Library of Congress
Subject Headings for a specific topic, to retrieve a list of
books & other materials about that topic. (e.g., global
warming)
- Subject Contains: Search Library of Congress
Subject Headings for a specific topic, to retrieve a list of
subjects. Click on the subject to see a list of books &
other materials. (e.g., global warming)
- Author: Search for the name of a specific
author (last name, first name) to retrieve a list of
authors. Click on the author to see a list of books &
other materials. (e.g., Miller, Arthur)
- Call Number Begins With: Search for a
specific Library of Congress call number range (assigned by topic)
to retrieve a list of books & other materials. Click on the
number next to the call number for detailed information. (e.g.,
QC981)
How can I make my search more specific (limit my
search)?
Limits allow you to search for materials at a
specific location, by format, or from a certain time period. Click
on the Set one limit menu to select one of the
options ( use only in keyword or title searches). They
include:
- Only Germantown/Rockville/Takoma Park/Art Library;
- Electronic Books/Journals;
- Last 5 Years;
- Videos & DVDs Germantown/Rockville/Takoma Park
- Recorded Music;
- and CDs Germantown/Rockville
You can select more advanced limit options by clicking the
Set Limit button in the bottom-right corner of the
main search screen.
How do I view the search results?
Your search will produce a list of titles, authors,
or subject headings. In a keyword or title search, your results will
show some of the location and availability information (see below).
Click the brown links to see the full record.
How do I print or e-mail records?
To print a record:
- Open the full record of the item that interests you, and
scroll to the bottom of the screen.
- Click Preview & Print / Preview &
Save to reformat the record.
- Click on File > Print from your web browser. Click the back
button on your browser window to return to the full record.
To e-mail a record:
- Open the full record of the item that interests you, and
scroll to the bottom of the screen.
- At the bottom of the screen, type your e-mail address in the
box and click Email.
