How do I access ProQuest Newspapers?
Current Montgomery College students, faculty, &
staff can access databases from on or off-campus. To access ProQuest
Newspapers:
- Start at the Montgomery College Library home page: www.montgomerycollege.edu/library
- Click on Databases by Subject. Click ProQuest
Newspapers under the Newspapers category.
- Off-campus or using a laptop on-campus: When
you click on the link to the database, you will be asked to log
in. Enter your Montgomery College ID ("M number,"
including the M) in the box. Problems logging in? Try the
tips in our Troubleshooting Checklist.
How do I search ProQuest Newspapers?
The database will open to the Basic
Search screen. To select the Advanced
Search, click the green tab above the search box. Use the
same methods to search in either the Basic or Advanced screen:
- Keywords: To search ProQuest Newspapers,
choose several keywords that describe your topic. Enter them in
the search box(es) with the connector words and
& or. If you do not use and & or, the
search will look for your words as a phrase (in the order you type
them into the search box). This can prevent you from finding a lot
of good articles.
- AND: Combines search words so that the
articles you get back contain all of the words you
entered. Use and to connect the different ideas that
you want the articles to discuss (e.g., eco-friendly and
building).
- OR: Combines search words so that the
articles you get back contain at least one of the words
you entered. Use or when you are searching with
synonyms, abbreviations, alternate spellings, or related terms
(e.g. environment or eco-friendly). NOTE: In
the Basic Search box, put words connected with or in
parentheses: building and (environment or eco-friendly). In the
Advanced Search boxes, put the terms connected with or
in the same search box.
- Limiting Your Search: You can tell the
database to search within a specific set of requirements. To do
this, use the options available below the search boxes or by
clicking More Search Options at the bottom of the screen. The more
limits you apply to your search, the fewer articles you will
retrieve.
- Full-text: To only retrieve articles with
full-text available, select the full-text option below the
search box.
- Published Date: To specify a date range for
the articles you retrieve, use the drop-down box. You can
retrieve articles from a pre-set amount of time (e.g., last 7
days) or set your own dates. Enter dates as mm/dd/yyyy (e.g.,
02/05/2001).
How can I view my search results?
After you search, you will see a list of newspaper
articles arranged in order by date, with the most recently published
article at the top of the list. To see the article citation,
abstract, and full-text (if available), click on the article's
title. The full text of the article will automatically be displayed
on the Document View page.
How can I print or e-mail articles?
- Print: Click on the Print icon located in the
yellow bar at the top of the Document View page. The article will
be reformatted in a new window. A print window should open
automatically; if it does not, select print from the File menu on
your web browser's toolbar.
- E-mail: Click on the E-mail icon located in
the yellow bar at the top of the Document View page. A new screen
will open. Complete the information in the e-mail form (you can
only enter one e-mail address at a time), then click Send Email.
