Creating Persistent Links to Electronic Articles

The Montgomery College Libraries provide access to approximately 20,000 full text
electronic magazines, journals and newspapers.  From time to time, faculty may
want their entire class to read an article or may want to compile a reading list,
electronically, for the class which can be disseminated via a Web page or sent
out via e-mail.

Each article has a unique identifying number or accession number, usually 7- to 9-digits
long.  Each article also has a unique URL, called a persistent link or a document URL
depending on the database vendor's terminology, which incorporates the article number
and which does not change or disappear after the user logs off or the session ends.
These URLs can then be copied and pasted into a Web page or an e-mail.

It is assumed that most of our students will be viewing articles from off campus
and, therefore, it is necessary to add the URL for our proxy server,
http://houdini.mc.cc.md.us:2048/login?url=, before the persistent link URL.
When the student clicks on the persistent link, they will be prompted to login.

GALE Databases
  • These databases include Expanded Academic ASAP, Computer Database, and
    Opposing Viewpoints
    to name a few.

  • Gale databases do not show the persistent link in the citation/abstract.
When you pull up an article, all you need to do is copy the entire URL
displayed at the top in your browser's address bar
    .

  • Again, you will need to add the URL for our proxy server before the URL
    for the article.

  • Students will be prompted to login as usual.
ProQuest Databases
  • These databases include National Newspapers, Ethnic NewsWatch, GenderWatch
and Criminal Justice to name a few.

  • ProQuest databases also show the document link in the citation but it is called
    a Document URL.

  • In order to make a link, copy and paste the document URL and, again, place
the URL for our proxy server before the document URL.
