Request Books & other items from other Libraries

Circulating books only can be transferred from one campus library to another through our intercampus loan (ICL) service.  Please fill out one of the Intercampus Loan request forms online. Items normally take 3-4 days to arrive and we will notify you when they arrive.

Or, we can borrow books or other items from other libraries through our interlibrary loan (ILL) services.  Please read the information below for exceptions on this service.

Forms for ILL
To request an ILL, submit a form online.  Fill out the form as completely and accurately as possible as this will help us to obtain the material for you.  Make sure you indicate your College affiliation and provide contact information.

  • If you are requesting a book, please use this form

  • If you are requesting an article, please use this form

Intercampus Loan Service (ICL)
You can have circulating materials available at any Montgomery College campus library sent to the campus library of your choice.  Reference books, magazines, journals, newspapers, and reserve items are not loaned between campuses.  For more information and for online forms, please go to http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/library/ICL_intro.htm.

Interlibrary Loan Service (ILL)
You can also arrange to borrow materials that the Montgomery College Libraries do not own through our interlibrary loan (ILL) service. This service is restricted to MC students, faculty and staff.

Community patrons cannot
request ILL service through Montgomery
College and should go through their local public library or school for this service.

Interlibrary loan is centralized at the Rockville Campus Library.  You can call us at 240-567-7118 or send an e-mail to Interlibrary Loan.  Requests can be submitted at any time but interlibrary loan staff hours are limited, 8:30 am to 5pm.

The policies followed in providing ILL are based on the policies of the Maryland Interlibrary Loan Organization (MILO), centrally located at Baltimore's Enoch Pratt Library, and on acceptable copyright provisions.

Patrons should not expect to obtain the following types of materials through ILL:

  • Titles held by the Montgomery College Libraries (check the MC Library Catalog)

  • Entire issues of periodicals

  • More than 3 articles from the same periodical

  • Copies of periodical articles owned by any of the 3 campus libraries unless the issue
    has been declared missing

  • Most audiovisual materials

  • Most reference titles/materials

  • Current bestsellers or new, popular titles

  • Most doctoral dissertations and/or masters theses

Every effort is made to obtain the material at no cost but a fee may apply.  You have the option to specify the amount, if any, you are willing to pay.  If you decline to pay a fee and we try to get the materials from 5 libraries, we will consider that we have discharged our responsibility and will not request the item again.

A personal check made out to the lending library is due at the time of pickup of the material.

We estimate that this process takes a minimum of two weeks but may take more.  A maximum of 10 requests per week per patron will be processed.  Additional requests may be processed as time and resources permit.

The lending library also determines the loan period and renewal policy for its materials.  Most loans are for 2 to 3 weeks but may be longer.  We can request an extension before the item is due.  In addition, some libraries restrict certain rare items to library use only.
