Boolean Search
Safari supports the standard Boolean search conventions.
Boolean operators must be typed ALL IN CAPS.
Safari interprets as space between words as a Boolean AND.
The search perl bioinformatics is the same as perl AND bioinformatics.
Use AND to combine unlike terms.
Use OR to combine like terms, synonyms, alternative spellings etc. OR means either/or.
dreamweaver AND (editing OR modifying)
Use quotation marks to search more than one word as a phrase.
"do loop"
Use the wildcard symbol *, to find multiple endings of a word.
check* will find check, checks, checking, check-in, check-out etc.
Advanced Search
Click on the Advanced Search link located directly under the Search Box
Type keywords in the Find Results box.
Click on the appropriate radio button for the kind of search you need.
With all these words is a Boolean AND
With exactly these years is a phrase search, equivalent to using quotation marks.
With at least one of these words is a Boolean OR
You may also perform a Boolean search on the Advanced Search screen.
The Advanced Search screen lets you narrow and focus searches. Look at the yellow box to the right of the word "in." This box lets you limit your search to full text, code fragments, section title words or tips and how-tos. Limiting a search to section title words will retrieve fewer results, but will let you find sections of books on a particular topic.
Printing and E-Mailing Results
You may print sections of a book one at a time. A section may be as short as a paragraph or the equivalent of several printed pages. Safari does not permit the printing of entire books with one command.
Once in a section of a book, look for the Safari Print Icon at the top of the section. Click on it, and Safari will reformat the page for printing. Avoid using your browser's print key; you risk loosing content on the right of the screen.
E-mailing sends a link to the e-mailed section. You will need to log into Safari to view the section.
Logging Out
Important. Our contract with Safari only permits five simultaneous users. Out of consideration for others who want to use Safari, please log out when you are finished.
