DuPont Chemist/Inventor to Speak at
Montgomery College-Germantown will present its third lecture in the 2003-2004 Spectrum Lecture Series on Wednesday, February 18, at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Mark E. Thompson, of DuPont, will discuss “The Crop Protection Industry: Providing Abundant and High-Quality Food for the World Tomorrow” in Room 162 of the Science and Applied Studies Building at Montgomery College-Germantown.
With a growing world population and a relatively fixed quantity of arable land, high food productivity is becoming increasingly important. From 1930 to 1990, world agricultural productivity increased thirteen-fold. One of the major causes for the increase was the use of synthetic organic chemicals to control weed, fungus and insect pests. Dr. Thompson’s lecture will present an overview of the global crop protection industry, focusing on the latest trends in agrochemicals and new technologies, such as biological control agents and genetically modified crops.
Dr. Thompson attended Montgomery College from 1973-1975 before transferring to Duke University where he received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry. In 1981, he earned his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Yale University, doing research in the area of natural products synthesis. After graduation, Dr. Thompson began work at DuPont, where he has worked with agricultural chemicals for most of the past 22 years. He now directs a group of 140 scientists, and serves as the global project manager for a new product candidate. He is listed as the inventor on twenty patents and has published several papers on new synthetic tools used in preparing biologically active molecules.
