Retiring Montgomery College Professor Shows Paintings and Photographs
Exhibit on Display at Rockville Campus Gallery, April 1-20

Retiring Montgomery College Professor Dan Voss will exhibit his paintings and photographs in a one-man show at the College’s Visual Communication Technologies (VCT) Gallery, located on the Rockville Campus, 51 Mannakee Street, from April 1-20.  An opening reception will be held at the VCT Gallery on Monday, April 5, 7-10 p.m.

For more than 38 years, Professor Dan Voss has taught at Montgomery College, everything from illustration to graphic design, photography, and cartooning.  Voss considers the exhibit a “last blast” before his retirement this summer.

The photographs in the exhibit, taken over many years, represent Voss’s time as a designer, traveler and teacher.  Voss has worked as a photographer for 61 years, since age 11.

“As a photographer, you can capture an image in a moment, in a way no painter can manage,” said Montgomery College Professor Dan Voss.  “Try painting on an escalator, in a downpour or on a traffic island in the middle of Times Square.  You can record the overall scene, catch a lighting effect and close-ups of details, and then make your selection when you return to the studio or darkroom.”

Up until seven years ago, Voss had his own darkroom inside his home.  Now, he focuses on painting, mostly creating realistic acrylics.  His one-man show includes painted landscapes as well as tributes to his favorite movies.

“Mostly, I work in mixed media.  I start out to make a straight watercolor, and then I get interested in the painted surface of an old carousel horse, the grill work on a classic car or the worn surface of a schoolroom desk, and I reach for a pencil and the painting knife.”

If asked whether he will paint more in his retirement, Voss says he does not know yet because his “wife has a ‘honey-do’ list as long as his arm.”

The VCT Gallery is located on the ground floor of the Technical Center at the College’s Rockville Campus.  Hours for the gallery are Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-10 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
