Montgomery College Hosts 15th Annual Celebration of Children’s Literature
All-Day Event Features Workshops, Speakers, Book Signings April 17

Montgomery College Workforce Development and Continuing Education will host the 15th Annual Celebration of Children’s Literature, “Varied Voices: I Hear America Singing,” on Saturday, April 17, from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., at the College’s High Tech and Science Center on the Germantown Campus, 20200 Observation Drive in Germantown, Maryland.

The all-day event features three speakers – author Elizabeth Levy, illustrator Floyd Cooper, and author/editor Michael Cart.  Levy’s presentation, “I Hear America Laughing,” will examine the struggle to help readers weed out the jokes that hurt from the deeper humor that helps.  Levy has written My Life as a Fifth Grade Comedian and America’s Funny but True Histories.  Cooper will discuss his artistic technique in his presentation, entitled “Expanding Visual Expression.”  The final speaker, Michael Cart, will challenge the stereotypical notion that young adult literature is an oxymoron, arguing that the genre is in the midst of a golden age.

In addition to speakers, event participants will take part in two workshops.  Subjects range from illustration to the International Children’s Digital Library and brainstorming ideas on the computer.

The Celebration of Children’s Literature is sponsored by Montgomery College, Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery County Department of Public Libraries, Friends of the Library, the Children’s Book Guild of Washington, Maryland Library Association, and the Catholic Library Association of the Archdiocese of Washington.  Participation in the event may be applied towards certification renewal for the Maryland Public Librarian Certificate or a Certificate of Achievement.  Teachers may earn 4.5 hours towards the renewal of an Advanced Professional Certificate within Montgomery County Public Schools.

Registration for the Celebration of Children’s Literature is $90, which includes materials and a boxed lunch.  An additional $35 fee is charged for participants who live outside of Maryland.  For more information or to obtain a registration form, call 240-567-2599 or e-mail tracy.singleton@montgomerycollege.edu.
