Montgomery College Invites Community to Audition for Orchestra on Sept. 13

Montgomery College invites students and community members, including high school students looking for college-level playing experience, to audition for the College Orchestra on Monday night, September 13, in the Music Building, Room 104, of the Rockville Campus, 51 Mannakee Street, Rockville.  Participants should call 240-567-5209 to schedule an arrival time of 7 p.m., 7:45 p.m., or 8:30 p.m.

The Orchestra has openings for musicians who play violin, viola, cello, or bass; flute, oboe, clarinet, or bassoon; horn, trumpet, trombone, or tuba; and timpani, percussion, or harp.  The auditions will be one-on-one with the conductor and will last 4-8 minutes.  Each participant will be asked to perform a music selection of his/her choice, and then sight-read another selection chosen by the conductor.

If selected for the orchestra, participants must enroll in MU171 College Orchestra.  The one-credit course is offered on Monday nights at 7:30 p.m. on the Rockville Campus.

“The orchestra class is an exceptional educational opportunity,” notes Dr. Wen Kurkul, professor of music and new conductor for the Montgomery College Orchestra.  “The orchestra will play two exciting concerts this fall semester – the first-ever multi-media arts concert in October and  Handel’s Messiah during the holiday season.”

To learn more about the Montgomery College Orchestra, contact Dr. Wen Kurkul, professor of music and orchestra conductor, at 240-567-7550.
