Montgomery College to Host 2009 Maryland State Science Bowl, January 17
Winner Will Advance to U.S. Dept. of Energy’s National Science Bowl

Montgomery College will host up to 16 high school teams from across the state as they compete in the 2009 Maryland State Science Bowl on January 17, 2008. The winning team from Maryland will advance to the 19th annual U.S. Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl, which will be held in Washington, D.C., in May 2009.

The Maryland State Science Bowl is a fast-paced quiz competition focused on astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth science, general science, mathematics and physics. Teams of four to five students participate in a round-robin competition that culminates with a final match between the top two teams.

The state competition is open to public and private schools, as well as teams comprised of students who are home-schooled or part of an organized sponsoring group.

Launched in 1991, the National Science Bowl (NSB) is a highly competitive science education and academic event among teams of high school and middle school students who compete in a fast-paced verbal forum to solve technical problems and answer questions in all branches of science and math. Each team is composed of four students, one alternate student, and a coach. Regional and national events encourage student involvement in math and science activities of importance to the Department of Energy and the nation.

For more information about the Maryland State Science Bowl, contact Miriam Carter, assistant to the deans at Montgomery College, at miriam.carter@montgomery.college.edu, or 240-567-5357.
