    Rockville, Maryland

The Montgomery College-Rockville Ethiopian Students Association and the Counseling Department will celebrate Black History Month on Wednesday, February 16, with an afternoon of entertainment and education.  The celebration will begin at 1:30 p.m., with speeches and information about the African nation of Ethiopia.  A musical performance will follow, scheduled at 2:15 p.m.  At the conclusion of the performance, students will serve one of Ethiopia’s national dishes and hold a traditional coffee ceremony.

The Ethiopian event is part of the “Gathering,” a series of programs held throughout the year at the Rockville Campus to highlight the diverse backgrounds of the Montgomery College community.  Gathering programs often feature art, music and food from around the world.  Organizers want the programs to encourage discussion and interaction amongst people of different cultures.

Montgomery College, a three-campus community college in Montgomery County, Maryland, has students from approximately 170 countries.  In the fall semester of 2004, close to 400 international students from Ethiopia attended Montgomery College.  Ethiopia ranks first as the country of origin for Montgomery College’s international students.
