Montgomery College Students Nail Down Grand Championship Title at National Construction Management Competition
Four-Person Team Pulls off Tour de Force, Overpowers Four-Year Schools

Just like “The Little Engine That Could,” the four-person student construction management team from Montgomery College walked away with the grand championship title at the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) annual Student Construction Management Competition in Orlando, Florida, this past February. Montgomery College was the only community college represented at the competition.

The four-person team of Jonathan Fox, Parker Goodfellow, Kara Guthro, and Greg Ramirez overpowered stiff competition—24 four-year schools—to nail down the overall championship. The Montgomery College team also placed second in the construction estimating category.

The grueling competition required the students to perform a cost estimate, prepare a project schedule, and develop a safety plan for a specified project. A panel of judges evaluated the projects and grilled the student teams as if they were general contractors responding to a proposal request.

“This is a true testament to the quality of our students, our programs and our institution,” said Professor Mario Parcan, head of the College’s construction management program and chair of applied technologies.

In 2001, Parcan received the John Trimmer Award for Excellence in Construction Education from the Construction Education Foundation, the educational arm of the ABC.

“I am obviously proud of our students, who put forth a tremendous effort, responsibility, commitment and superior work ethic towards their solution,” said Parcan. “I must admit that I have not seen in past competitions a more dedicated group. They are truly an outstanding team.”

Note to Editors: The Montgomery College winners of the ABC Student Construction Competition will be honored at a celebration on Thursday, March 10, at 5:15 p.m., in Room 136, Technical Center, Montgomery College’s Rockville Campus, 51 Mannakee Street, Rockville.
