Montgomery College–Takoma Park/Silver Spring

7600 Takoma Avenue

Takoma Park, Maryland

More than 300 elementary school students will participate in Montgomery College’s third annual Earth Day event at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus on Friday, April 20. Organized by the campus’s biology department, the event will feature Montgomery College faculty, staff, and students educating school children about the environment with a series of fun, hands-on activities and experiments.

The children will “build” make-believe, edible aquifers and landfills to learn about the treatment and cleaning of water and waste and use recycled material to make terrariums. Teams of kids will compete in a water saving game to see who can use the least amount of water and they will play “Save Gil the Guppy and His Guppy Friends,” a game which teaches children about the effects of water pollution.

Children will also get an up-close look at various creepy and crawly critters, such as leeches, beetles, worms, and reptiles. Other activities include making Earth Day crafts out of recycled material, learning about natural resources, making a trip to the College’s planetarium, located on the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, and visiting with T-Recs, the Montgomery County Recreation Department’s mascot.
