Stanislavsky Theater Studio and Montgomery College Collaborate to Bring Actor Training, Theater Productions to Community

Montgomery College and the International Stanislavsky Theater Studio (STS), an award-winning professional theater and conservatory, have formed an artistic partnership to bring advanced actor training and theatre productions to the community. Currently, the STS is a professional theater in residence at the College’s Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, with acting classes taught in the dance studio and an original production of Dostoyevsky’s "Crime and Punishment" at the College’s Black Box Theatre May 20 through June 18.

“The Stanislavsky Theater Studio’s professional training program, workshops and production of ‘Crime and Punishment’ will give our students and our community a new and exciting level of theatre activities in the coming year and hopefully for many years to come,” said Perry Schwartz, chair of the Communication and Performing Arts Department at the campus. “As we move towards the opening of our new Cultural Arts Center at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus in 2008, we will be developing more artistic partnerships like the one we created with STS.”

The mission of STS is to provide theater education to students and to serve people in the community. Through its Education and Outreach Program, STS provides special performances for area schools in with the objective of getting young people to appreciate theatre. In their 2002-2003 season, STS served more than 12,000 students throughout the region. At Montgomery College, the STS will present a series of workshops and lectures for students about the training methods and legacies of Russian Theater masters Konstantin Stanislavsky, Yevgeny Vakhtangov and Michael Chekhov.

“We look forward to working together with Montgomery College to build a long-lasting and fruitful relationship that will benefit both organizations and the community,” said Stanislavsky Theater Studio’s producing artistic director Andrei Malaev-Babel. “We hope our international focus will help us enrich the College’s already diverse community and cultural life.”

Long-term plans for collaboration include the establishment of a program based on the existing STS Intensive Acting Training Program, “The Art of Acting,” and joint community outreach initiatives between the College and the STS Education and Outreach Program.

Called “a jewel in the community” by WETA, STS has won two Helen Hayes Awards, the Mary Goldwater Award for Excellence Against the Odds and The World Bank Community Outreach Recognition Award.
