County Executive Isiah Leggett to Deliver Keynote Address at ‘Graduation’ Ceremony for Montgomery College Program for Students with Developmental Disabilities
WEDNESDAY, MAY 7, 2008 10:30 A.M. Montgomery College, Rockville Campus Theatre Arts Arena 51 Mannakee Street, Rockville, Md.
Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will deliver the keynote address at a special ceremony honoring 11 developmentally disabled students who have overcome incredible personal odds and successfully completed the Graduate Transition Program (GTP). The ceremony will feature the presentation of outstanding achievement awards and graduation certificates, and speeches by the student class representatives.
GTP is a two-year, non-credit certificate program, through the College’s Workforce Development and Continuing Education division, which is designed to help special needs students become independent after high school. This unique post-secondary educational opportunity was developed when two mothers of developmentally disabled teens wanted a college option for their children. Potomac Community Resources and Target Community and Educational Services work in partnership with Montgomery College to provide students with classes at the College, allowing students to learn important life skills in such areas as public speaking, finances and computers.
