Montgomery College will celebrate the accomplishments of eight developmentally disabled students who have overcome the odds and successfully completed the Graduate Transition Program (GTP). GTP is a two-year, non-credit certificate program, through the College’s Workforce Development and Continuing Education unit, for students with special needs. The May 10 ceremony will include a keynote address by Montgomery College President Charlene Nunley, a slide presentation, the presentation of achievement awards and certificates to the students, and words of farewell from graduates.
Students in GTP benefit from the small classes and college campus setting to learn everything from public speaking and computers to writing and mathematics. Most importantly, they receive coaching, training and placement services that enable them to find and keep jobs. The ultimate goal is to give the students the necessary skills to live, learn, and work independently in the community.
The program began several years ago when two mothers of developmentally disabled teens decided they wanted a college option for their children. As members of Potomac Community Resources—a support group for people with special needs—the women approached Montgomery College and Target Community and Educational Services. Together, they created this unique program aimed at helping special needs students become independent after high school.
