Montgomery College Joins Six Community Colleges to Offer Specialized Training for Sensitive/Secure Site Construction

Montgomery College and six other Maryland community colleges are now offering specialized training classes for employees of construction companies who plan to work on sensitive or secure sites as part of the U.S. Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) initiative.

Montgomery College will offer training for workers who need specific skills for the construction and retrofit contracts designated by the federal government as Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIFs). SCIF facilities are found on military bases and in civilian agencies, on government property, and on property built or leased to government contractors and private businesses.

“Montgomery College welcomes the opportunity to offer training to companies affected by the BRAC initiative," said George Payne, Vice President of Workforce Development and Continuing Educations at the College. "Taking part in this innovative program will expand employment options for area builders as well as provide a new and exciting direction for students who want to pursue construction industry careers after earning degrees at Montgomery College."

Montgomery College and six other community colleges in BRAC project areas have formed a consortium, led by Frederick Community College (FCC), to offer the specialized training for construction industry workers. Besides Montgomery College and FCC, classes will be offered at Anne Arundel Community College, Community College of Baltimore County, Harford Community College, Howard Community College, and Prince George's Community College.

For registration information about the classes, go to www.scifinfo.com.

For more information about upcoming SCIF classes at Montgomery College, contact Eric Jeffers, program director for workforce technologies, at eric.jeffers@montgomerycollege.edu or 240-567-7902.
