This October, The Arts Institute of Montgomery College will present WillPower!, a week-long celebration of the world of William Shakespeare with a series of free performances for the public. The American Shakespeare Center on Tour, the touring arm of the American Shakespeare Center and the Blackfriars Playhouse, will perform three plays for WillPower! The plays are part of the theatre company’s 2006–2007 Tragical Mirth Tour: Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Julius Caesar,” along with Edmond Rostand’s “Cyrano de Bergerac,” translated and adapted for the stage by Anthony Burgess.

  • “Julius Caesar” – Tuesday, October 17 at 10 a.m.

In this profoundly moving and deeply human tragedy, Shakespeare gives us a world spinning out of control with some of history’s most famous men committing horrific crimes in the name of patriotism and honor. “Julius Caesar” is a dazzling masterpiece of betrayal, violence, and perhaps most surprisingly—love.

  • “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” – Tuesday, October 17 at 7 p.m.

The play’s theatrical spell is powerful enough to make audiences of all ages believe in anything. Lovers lost in the woods succumb to magical potions, legendary Greek heroes dispute issues of art, rude mechanicals rehearse a play in the woods, and the Queen of Fairies falls in love with an ass-headed man. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is Shakespeare’s hilarious tribute to all you can imagine.

  • “Cyrano de Bergerac” – Thursday, October 19 at 7 p.m.

This play has enormous wit, tremendous bravery, gigantic spirit, and a gargantuan nose. Cyrano is passionately in love with the glorious Roxane, but believes that she could never love him as he is. He uses his poetry to woo his great love on behalf of the beautiful Christian, whom Roxane thinks she loves. Years pass and Cyrano finally learns the answer to the question he could never ask.

The internationally acclaimed American Shakespeare Center (ASC) on Tour is a troupe of actors with members from across the United States and abroad. The ensemble performs under conditions closely approximating those for which Shakespeare originally wrote—“two hours’ traffic of our stage,” a small cast of performers who double roles, thrust staging, and universal lighting.

All performances are free and will take place at the College’s Theatre Arts Arena, located on the Rockville Campus, 51 Mannakee Street, Rockville, Md. For more information about WillPower!, visit or call 301-610-4001. For persons requiring special accommodations, call 301-279-5058.

Support for WillPower! was provided by The Webber Family Foundation and the Maryland Humanities Council. Additional support was provided by Montgomery College’s Department of Speech, Dance, and Theatre and the Department of English Composition, Literature, and Professional Writing.
