MC Professors to Deliver a Series of Talks on Recent Advances and Issues in Science

Montgomery College’s Rockville Campus SEM (Science, Engineering, and Mathematics) Exchange, a series of presentations by Montgomery College professors about recent advances and issues in the sciences, will take place October 23, 30 and November 13. The hour-long presentations will be held in the Science West Building, Room 122, on the College’s Rockville Campus, 51 Mannakee Street in Rockville. They are free and open to the public.

Dr. Sripriya Seetharaman, an assistant professor in the Chemistry Department, delivers a lecture about coordination compounds, which are the chemical compounds that cause the colors in gems or the red color of blood. In this presentation, the chemistry and electronic structure of coordination compounds will be introduced along with the roles of these compounds in chemistry.

• Thursday, October 30 at 2:30 p.m.: “Timbre and Pitch: Can Mathematics Alone Explain What Make Musical Sounds Pleasant?

Professor Alison Rose and Professor Tom Gleim of the College’s Mathematics Department present a scientific explanation for why sounds are pleasant to the ear. The presenters will look at the mathematics of tone production and relative pitch to explain why some tones and some musical intervals may be more pleasing than others. They will demonstrate with real and virtual instruments.

• Thursday, November 13 at 2:30 p.m.: “Come On, Let’s Check Out Bars!”

Professor Luc Desir, an assistant professor in the Mathematics Department, asks: Did you know that there is mathematics going on when you glance at your watch or when you check out at your local grocery store? That kind of mathematics is widely used to check for errors in data through various check digit methods. This talk introduces the elegant, practical, and memorable ideas in mathematics.
