Montgomery College, Women’s Bar Foundation to Host Seminar for High School Students on “Preparing for Success,” Nov. 18
Event to Feature Keynote Address by Alana Beard of the Washington Mystics

Montgomery College and the Montgomery County Chapter of the Women’s Bar Foundation, Inc. are hosting the sixth annual “Preparing for Success” seminar for local high school students on Saturday, Nov. 18, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Montgomery College’s Rockville Campus, Theatre Arts Arena, 51 Mannakee Street, Rockville.

The all-day program is designed for high school girls who plan to attend college or enter the workplace. The day begins with breakfast and remarks from keynote speaker Alana Beard, who is the guard/forward for the WNBA’s Washington Mystics. Beard, a graduate of Duke University, was drafted by the Mystics in the first-round (second overall) of the 2004 draft. Since joining the team, she has been one of the league’s leaders in both scoring and stealing. Beard is a two-time All-Star (2005, 2006) and Duke University’s all-time leading scorer for men and women with 2,687 points. Prior to her graduation, Beard had her jersey retired by the university.

After the keynote speaker, students attend workshops on resume writing and interview techniques, budgets, staying safe, and becoming independent. An event tradition, “The Right Look” fashion show, will conclude the program.

The program is free of charge and open to high school students in public, private, and alternative schools, as well as girls in independent living programs. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Free bus service to the event will be provided from several local high schools. Pick-up at Watkins Mill, Montgomery Blair, and Paint Branch High Schools is at 9:15 a.m. Buses will also pick up students at Gaithersburg, Einstein, and Blake High Schools at 9:30 a.m.

The “Preparing for Success” program has won two awards, one from the Maryland State Bar Association for “Best Service to the Public Project Award,” and one from the Montgomery County Bar Association to the Honorable Katherine D. Savage for her work in developing this program.

“Preparing for Success” is also sponsored by Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery County Commission for Women, the J. Franklyn Bourne Association, and the Maryland Hispanic Bar Association.
