Montgomery College’s Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus will host Stanislavsky Theatre Studio’s original production, “Babel: How It Was Done In Odessa,” onstage at the College’s Black Box Theatre, in the Communications Arts Center, on three weekends in December—Dec. 1–3, 9–10, and 15–17. All performances are free, but reservations are recommended.

The play is a tribute to Russian writer Isaac Babel by his grandson, actor-artist Andrei Malaev-Babel, who performs three of Babel’s stories in a solo performance. The adapted stories celebrate the vibrant, colorful life of Odessa and its citizens. The resulting play honors the city as it was before the Russian Revolution.

This production celebrates not only Isaac Babel’s stories but also his life, lived at times carelessly and recklessly, and ending suddenly and anonymously. Babel’s stories were translated by actor Andrei Malaev-Babel and adapted for the stage by Roland Reed. The director is Sarah Kane and the designer is Alexander Okun.

This production begins the Arts Alive theatre performance season at the Black Box Theatre on Montgomery College’s Takoma Park/ Silver Spring Campus. It continues the artistic partnership between the College and Stanislavski Theatre Studio. The season will continue into 2007 with a production from Rep Stage and two productions co-produced by the Communication and Performing Arts Department and artistic partner Spooky Action Theatre.

“Babel: How It Was Done In Odessa” will be performed at 8 p.m. on December 1–2, 9, and 15–16. There will also be three Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. on December 3, 10, and 17. All performances will take place at the Black Box Theatre at Montgomery College’s Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus. The theatre is located in the Communications Arts Center at the corner of Chicago and Philadelphia Avenues, Takoma Park, Md.
