Montgomery College Receives State Funding to Deliver Special Program for Child Care Providers

Montgomery College’s Workforce Development & Continuing Education unit has received funding in the amount of $100,000 from the Maryland State Department of Education, Office of Child Care, to deliver a special program for childcare providers entitled “OneUp Infant and Toddler Training.” This is the first time the College has offered such a program. The comprehensive, 45-hour training prepares caregivers to work effectively with infants and toddlers and their families.
The classes satisfy the Maryland Department of Human Resources, Child Care Licensing 45-hour requirement for preparing caregivers to deliver high-quality, nurturing care to infants and toddlers in out-of-home settings.

In January 2006 the College will offer four sections of the training: two in Spanish and two in English. Classes will meet for six hours on Saturdays for a total of nine sessions. Current research, theories, and best practices in caring for infants and toddlers will form the core of the course.

The nine sessions cover the topics of Principles of Caregiving and Infant-Toddler Education • Caregiving as Curriculum/Play as Curriculum • Attachment and Brain Development • Physical Development/Motor Skills • Perception, Cognition, and Language • Social-Emotional Development • The Physical Environment: Health and Safety • Relationships with Families and Professionals • Maryland Licensing Requirements: Rules and Regulations.

Students participating in “OneUp” will receive subsidized tuition, educational texts and materials, and a “Beginning with Babies” resource bag containing the essential tools and toys for stimulating infants and toddlers.
