Montgomery College, Chevy Chase Bank Partnership Wins National Award
Partnership Recognized for Workforce Development by National Council of Instructional Administrators

A partnership between Montgomery College and Chevy Chase Bank that helps to place students in jobs, while earning them tuition assistance benefits, earned an honorable mention in the workforce development category of an Exemplary Initiatives Competition sponsored by the National Council of Instructional Administrators.

In 2004, Chevy Chase Bank and Montgomery College created a student recruitment initiative for the bank that became a winning proposition for students, as well as both institutions. To date, more than 320 students from Montgomery College have become Chevy Chase Bank employees.

As a result of the partnership, the rapidly expanding financial institution has gained eager employees who are generally retained at a greater rate than those employees who are not Montgomery College students.

Chevy Chase Bank works closely with Montgomery College Student Employment Services to advertise openings. Bank representatives also attend career fairs at the College, conduct workshops, and make presentations to increase student interest. Moreover, the bank's representatives have worked with Student Employment Services to assist students in resume building and interviewing skills.

"It is a winning strategy," said Dr. Clarice Somersall, vice president of Learning and Academic Effectiveness, who, along with Wayne Barbour, associate dean of Student Services at the Germantown Campus, was instrumental in bringing the two institutions together. Added Somersall, “Chevy Chase Bank has been a true partner in every sense of the word. Most importantly, our students have been the real beneficiaries with jobs and future careers at Chevy Chase Bank and the opportunity to continue their education.”

Once students are employed either full-time or part time and have worked 1,000 hours, they are eligible for tuition reimbursement of up to $5,000 per year. For each student who remains employed by the bank for one year, Chevy Chase donates $250 to the Montgomery College Foundation to fund future scholarships. The bank has contributed approximately $72,000 to the foundation.

Montgomery College’s partnership with Chevy Chase Bank has become a model for similar partnerships at Northern Virginia Community College and Prince George's Community College, who have now created their own student employment programs with Chevy Chase Bank.
