Montgomery College Summer Dinner Theater
Serves up Fairy Tales and Gerswhin
The College’s Dinner Theater Productions Are More than Just Summer School
Rockville, Maryland -- Montgomery College Summer Dinner Theater celebrates its 23rd season with presentations of two classic musical comedies that will entertain the audiences and educate the performers.
More than 90 Montgomery College students will spend their summer learning the trade of theater as performers, technicians, theater administrators and even waiters and waitresses during the season’s run of performances.
“It is an intense experience of 10 weeks of training and production,” says Susan Hoffman, chair of the Department Speech, Drama and Theater at the Rockville Campus. “But you won’t know it is a class by the time we open. It is just an intense amount of young energy.”
The season kicks off with Once Upon a Mattress, a humorous reworking of the fairy tale The Princess and Pea. The play centers around the schemes of the Queen Mother to keep her son from the clutches of a self-proclaimed worthy princess. The action is carried by the music of Mary Rodgers, daughter of Richard Rodgers, and the lyrics of Marshall Barer.
As its second offering, the dinner theater will perform Crazy For You, the so called “new” Gershwin Musical Comedy that took Broadway by storm in 1992 and was credited by critics with revitalizing musical theater in the United States. The play, written by Ken Ludwig, is a remake of the musical, Girl Crazy, and is primarily a vehicle for presenting the musical genius of the two Gershwin brothers – George and Ira – who did the music for the original 1930s play. There are many classics, such as “Embraceable You” and “I Got Rhythm,” that will keep your feet tapping all summer long.
Once Upon A Mattress will be presented on June 23, 24, 30 and July 1, 2, 7 and 8. Crazy for You will run July 14, 15, 21, 22,23, 28 and 29. The dinner buffet opens at 6:30 p.m.; the performance begins approximately 8:15 p.m.
