Popular Theater Arts Camp Returns to Sherwood High School
Rockville, MD -- The Maryland Summer Center for Theater Arts is not just another face in the crowd of day camps focusing on theater arts in Montgomery County.
"The Summer Center camp is aimed at highly motivated and interested middle school students who want to have an authentic experience of creating a dramatic performance," says Sandi Harris, director of Montgomery Colleges Youth Programs. "It is the only one in the region for middle school students."
Harris describes the two-week camp, which will be held at Sherwood High School, as a mix of the dramatic arts, diverse cultural perspectives and lessons in critical thinking. Participants become involved in all aspect of creating a dramatic performance including play writing, set and costume design and, of course, performing. The final product is fun for everyone involved.
The theater arts camp is hosted by Montgomery Colleges Continuing Education Youth Programs and is funded in part by a grant from the State Department of Education. The Summer Centers program seeks to provide summer enrichment opportunities for gifted and talented students across the state. The states support is the reason the camps tuition is so affordable only $200 per child, according to Harris.
There are still open slots for the camp, which will run July 17 through July 28. Applicants will be asked to provide a letter of recommendation from a teacher or instructor as a part of the application process. For information about applying, call 240-567-7917 or 240-567-7939.
