African-American Woman Navy Admiral to Speak
At Montgomery College, Rockville Campus on February 23
Former Rockville
Resident to Address Issues of Women in the Military
As part of Montgomery College’s
celebration of Black History Month, Rear Admiral L. Elaine
Fishburne, the first African-American woman to reach the rank of
admiral in the U.S. Navy, will speak at the College’s Rockville
Campus on Friday, February 23 at noon in the Theatre Arts
Building.
Admiral Fishburne, who was raised in
Rockville and graduated from Richard
Montgomery H.S., will share her unique experiences while
climbing the ladder of success as a naval officer in a
presentation titled, "Women in the Military: One Woman’s
Journey."
In her 20-plus years of naval service,
Admiral Fishburne’s career has taken her from Navy recruit to
her current position as deputy director and fleet liaison of the
Space, Information Warfare, Command and Control Directorate.
She has received the Defense Superior
Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (two
awards), Navy Commendation Medal (two awards) and the Navy
Achievement Medal.
Admiral Fishburne’s lecture is free and
