Montgomery College Adds
Asian History
and Chinese Language Courses
Montgomery College will introduce Chinese
language and culture courses for the fall 2001 semester.
Elementary Chinese I, funded by U.S. Department of Education
grant provisions for the Foreign Language Program entitled "The
New Global Migration: Case Studies in Reshaping World Cultures,
will be the prototype for subsequent course development, and
disseminated nationally through the American Association of
Community Colleges.
Elementary Chinese I,
a beginning language course, will focus on Chinese language and
culture. Students will be trained in the four language skills of
listening, speaking, reading and writing. In conjunction with
the grant-funded course, the College will offer History of
Asian Americans—a new general studies course that
examines Asian immigration under capitalism, discrimination and
exclusion, resistance to oppression, and the myth of the "model
minority." Both courses will be offered at the College’s
Rockville Campus.
