Montgomery College Art Exhibition Features Painters-Poets Partnerships
Reception and Poetry
Reading Set for June 29 at Rockville Campus

The USA meets the UK for word/image interplay.  That’s pretty much the theme of the Painters and Poets International Group exhibition, currently on display at the Montgomery College Rockville campus.

Presented by the Montgomery College Visual Communications Technologies Department and a group known as Poets Anonymous of Fairfax, Virginia, the show reflects the efforts of painters depicting poetry in their art and poets writing about works of art.

A passage in the show’s guide provides an apt description: “A collaboration between eight painters and eight poets from the United Kingdom and eight painters and eight poets from the United States. A painter from the U.S. paints a painting based on a UK poet's poem. The poet writes a poem about one of the U.S. painter's paintings. In turn a UK painter paints about a U.S. poet's poem, etc.”  Collectively, the members are known as the Painters and Poets International Group.

The 64-piece Montgomery College exhibit parallels one in England, put on by Poets Anonymous of Croydon and the miniGalleries Artists’ Cooperative.  The projects  demonstrate the collaborative synergy and multiple layers of interpretation and experience that cross-media inspiration can stimulate.  Paintings are hung with poems they inspired and vice-versa.

The highlight event of the Montgomery College exhibition, a reception and poetry reading, will be held Saturday, June 29 from 3 to 6 p.m.  Painters and poets will be on hand to discuss their work.

The show continues through August 23 at the VCT Gallery, first floor, Technical Center, northwest corner of Montgomery College’s Rockville Campus, 51 Mannakee Street.  Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
