Fenton St. Realignment near Montgomery
Partial Closure to Affect Section of Roadway from New York Ave. to Takoma Ave
A portion of Fenton Street that runs along the Montgomery College-Takoma Park Campus will be closed for approximately an eight-week period, beginning Monday, July 15, as construction work gets underway on the road's planned realignment. Part of the broader effort to complete a key aspect of the campus's current expansion plan -- namely, the construction of a new student services center to be built on Fenton Street -- the realignment will also benefit the community by providing for an improved roadway and an adjacent hiker-biker trail.
The temporary closure of Fenton Street is part of the initial phase of a realignment project that is expected to take approximately 10 months. The closure, affecting a short stretch of the roadway between New York Avenue and Takoma Avenue, was timed to be done during the summer months, when the traffic counts are traditionally slower in that area.
During the period of closure, traffic will be rerouted around the Montgomery College-Takoma Park Campus, as motorists will be detoured from Fenton Street to Philadelphia Avenue to Takoma Avenue. Ride On buses that normally travel down the affected stretch of Fenton Street will utilize Philadelphia Avenue to Takoma Avenue. In order to make construction details and information available for review, the College will hold a community briefing on July 9, 2002, at 6:30 p.m., at the Takoma Park Campus, 7600 Takoma Avenue, Science North Building Room 100, Takoma Park, Maryland.
Citizens with questions about the Fenton Street realignment or other aspects of construction work related to the Montgomery College-Takoma Park expansion can contact the project manager from Bovis Lend Lease, at 301-588-0939. For general information on the campus expansion, contact Chahnaz McRae, the College's senior project manager, at 240-567-7374 or Jennie Wells, the campus's community outreach coordinator, at 240-567-3904.
