Presents Entrepreneur Raul J. Fernandez
Montgomery College’s Gordon and Marilyn Macklin Business Institute presents Raul J. Fernandez as part of its Distinguished Lecture Series on Thursday, October 3 at 2 p.m. in the Rockville campus Theatre Arts Arena. Fernandez, the chairman emeritus of Dimension Data North America, titles his presentation “From Start-up to Fortune 500 to Venture Philanthropy; Lessons in Life, Business, and the Business of Life.”
Fernandez, a native Washingtonian, is one of the region’s leading entrepreneurs and ranks among its wealthiest and most successful executives under age 40. He founded Proxicom in 1991 with $40,000 of his personal savings. Under his leadership, the company evolved into a leading global provider of e-business solutions for Fortune 500 companies.
Today, Dimension Data/Proxicom utilizes its expertise in e-business consulting and development, along with the newly integrated skills of networking services and managed services to provide integrated solutions to a blue-chip client base, which includes Marriott International, General Electric, General Motors, Merrill Lynch, and Renault, among many others.
Fernandez is active in philanthropy and is a founding member of Venture Philanthropy Partners, an organization committed to helping boost the level and effectiveness of giving in the Washington area. He is part owner of the National Basketball Associations’s Washington Wizards, the Washington Mystics of the Women’s NBA, and the National Hockey League’s Washington Capitals.
Fernandez joins Norman Augustine of Lockheed Martin, Patrick Byrne of Overstock.com, and others in becoming an MBI Distinguished Lecturer.
Founded in 1999 and named for its primary benefactors, Gordon and Marilyn Macklin, the Macklin Business Institute provides a rigorous business honors program for selected sophomore-level students at Montgomery College. Each student in the program receives a scholarship, participates in a business internship and is teamed with a faculty and corporate mentor. Participating students also have the opportunity to transfer to top business schools for completion of their studies. The institute's associated Macklin Center for Entrepreneurship provides specialized programs for the business community.
