Montgomery College-Rockville Students Achieve Top Honors
 in Math Competition
Community College team finishes first in the Mid-Atlantic region;
Students from Silver Spring, Wheaton, Derwood and Germantown

Imagine spending an hour testing your mathematics knowledge on questions ranging from logarithms to geometry and probability.  It may sound next to impossible, but for some Montgomery College-Rockville students, it was an award-winning experience.

The Montgomery College-Rockville Student Mathematics League recently won first place among Mid-Atlantic community college teams in the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges competition.  Montgomery College-Rockville placed 10th overall against 165 colleges from the United States and Bermuda.

The MC team held its first test competition last November with a second test held this March.  The overall team score came from the top five scoring students who participated in both competitions.  With 272 points, Montgomery College-Rockville reclaimed its place as #1 in the Mid-Atlantic region.  The College edged out New Jersey’s Brookdale Community College by one-half a point.  The MC-Rockville Student Math League last held this title in 2000.

Montgomery College Professor Alex Bathula acts as the team’s moderator.  He said, when he learned his students won the Mid-Atlantic title, “I was ecstatic.”  He added, “The next thing we should do is maintain the title.  That’s the hard part.”

Professor Susan King, chair of the Montgomery College-Rockville Mathematics Department, agreed, “It is terrific news.  Since we won by one-half a point, we realize that we’ll have to work hard next year.”

The top scoring students from both competitions were Pooya Nazeran, a resident of Derwood; Paul Rueger, a resident of Wheaton; Nguyen Nguyen, a resident of Germantown; Linh Nguyen, a resident of Silver Spring; and Leah Brown, a resident of Silver Spring.  In the Mid-Atlantic region, Nguyen’s combined score put him in sixth place among individual team members.  Teammate Brown placed third in her region and 23rd nationwide.

These top five students and Alex Bathula, moderator of the Montgomery College-Rockville Student Math League, will be honored at the College’s Honors Convocation on May 21.  For information about the MC-Rockville Student Math League and the recent competition, contact Alex Bathula at 240-567-5214.
