Montgomery College Features “Illustrating Nature” Art Exhibit
Local Illustrators’ Work on Display September 2 – October 10

What captures your attention outdoors?  Are you drawn to birds, beasts, or bugs?  Find out what others see when you look at nature through the eyes of local illustrators at the “Illustrating Nature” art exhibit presented by Montgomery College’s Department of Visual Communications Technologies.  “Illustrating Nature” runs from September 2 – October 10 in the Visual Communications Technologies Art Gallery, Technical Center building, Montgomery College’s Rockville Campus, 51 Mannakee Street, Rockville.

“Illustrating Nature” features 11 illustrators who used various media to create pictures of both the creepy and crawly as well as the beautiful.  The artists are from the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators or the Illustrators Club of Washington, D.C.  Several are former Montgomery College students, including Vichai Malikul who is a scientific illustrator with the Smithsonian Institution.  Malikul is the illustrator of the book, “A Field Guide to Eastern Butterflies,” which is part of the Peterson Field Guides series.

“The Metropolitan area is well known for its nature illustrators,” says John D. Voss, exhibit organizer and Montgomery College professor of advertising art.  “I find the productivity and skill of these men and women to be most interesting.  They are able to create hundreds of meticulous illustrations for one publication without sacrificing quality.”

The show’s opening reception will be held on Wednesday, September 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the VCT Art Gallery.  Gallery hours for the “Illustrating Nature” exhibit, September 2 – October 10, will be Mondays-Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Fridays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
