Montgomery College Awarded 2003 Latino Advocacy Award
Presentation on October 18 by Maryland Latino Coalition for Justice
Montgomery College will receive the 2003 Latino Advocacy Award from the Maryland Latino Coalition for Justice at its awards luncheon on Saturday,
October 18, 1 p.m., Langley Park Community Center in Langley Park. The Coalition selected Montgomery College as the institution that “best supported the Latino community to advance its legislative agenda.”
This year, the Montgomery College community, the Board of Trustees, and alumni were active advocates on behalf of the College, writing letters, making telephone calls, and sending groups to Annapolis to testify before legislators in support of community college funding and other legislative initiatives. One of the key bills that the College supported was HB 253/SB 520, which would have granted in-state tuition to undocumented students at Maryland public colleges and universities if they had attended a Maryland high school for three years and graduated or received a general equivalency degree. HB 253/SB 520 successfully passed both the House of Delegates and the Senate in the 2003 Maryland General Assembly. Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. vetoed the measure in May.
The Maryland Latino Coalition for Justice is made up of individual members and non-profit organizations, such as CASA of Maryland, located in Takoma Park, and the Public Justice Center in Baltimore. The Coalition advocates on behalf of the Latino community in Maryland, ensuring that its voice is heard in Annapolis. This is the second year for the Maryland Latino Coalition for Justice’s Latino Advocacy Awards.
