Montgomery College Partners with Macau
Millennium College in China
Montgomery College and Macau Millennium College, a two-year college located in the Macau Special Administrative Region of China, have entered into a memorandum of understanding that will encourage educational and cultural exchange between the two institutions.
The partnership is the result of approximately two years of dialogue between the colleges. The agreement will support efforts to augment English language instructional practices at Macau Millennium College. In addition, because Macau Millennium College and Montgomery College offer hospitality management programs, it is envisioned that students, faculty, and staff will be able to share their expertise and experiences.
“We’re very excited about this partnership with Macau Millennium College and it is a wonderful extension of the fact that we already serve an incredibly diverse college community with students from approximately 170 nations,” said Dr. Charlene R. Nunley, president of Montgomery College. “The memorandum of understanding will allow for an exchange of ideas as well as the exchange of faculty, staff and students, enabling everyone to learn about different cultures and learning practices.”
Hospitality management students are not the only ones who will benefit from Montgomery College’s formal relationship with Macau Millennium College. Students from Montgomery College who travel to Macau will have the opportunity to learn Chinese and obtain internships from five-star hotels and casinos in Macau. Other opportunities for Macau students at Montgomery College are being explored, such as studying biotechnology at the Germantown Campus and nursing at the Takoma Park Campus.
On September 15, Dr. Kai Cheong Fok, Vice President of Macau Millennium College, visited Montgomery College to take a closer look at the programs and services available to visiting students and faculty. Dr. Fok toured the Marriott Hospitality Center on the College’s Rockville Campus and the new Health Sciences Center, set to open in January 2004, on the Takoma Park Campus. He also met with Montgomery College President Charlene Nunley, other administrators, program coordinators and faculty members. He concluded his visit with a formal introduction to the Montgomery College Board of Trustees during their annual meeting.
“We realize Montgomery College is one of the most unique community colleges in the United States,” said Dr. Fok of Macau Millennium College, during his visit to Montgomery College. “This partnership is a remarkable opportunity for us.”
