JANE AUSTEN'S ENGLAND TOUR
May 20 – May 29, 2005

Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Persuasion,
Mansfield Park, Sense and Sensibility, Northanger
Abbey - Jane Austen's novels have entered the imagination of
generations of readers. Now come and visit some of the places
and sites that helped to form her literary sensibilities. Stroll
along the streets of the 18th century spa city of Bath, take in
the sea air at Lyme Regis, visit Chawton Cottage where Austen
wrote a number of her novels, see the splendors of Brighton and
stay in the historic Red Lion Inn - a medieval coaching inn in
Salisbury whose origins date back to the 13th century. It was
voted "Best Historic Inn in Britain" in 2002 by British Heritage

ENGLAND TOUR ITINERARY
Fri. May 20 Depart
IAD
Flight to London, Heathrow.
Sat. May 21 Arrive
London, Heathrow
Bus to Brighton. Check in to Hilton Brighton Metropole for two nights.
Rest of day to explore the promenade, seafront, tiny cobbled streets,
stores and boutiques of Brighton. Dinner in hotel.
Sun. May 22 Brighton
Breakfast in hotel. Visit Brighton Royal Pavilion: this impressive
structure was originally built for King George IV who led a somewhat
scandalous life; the pavilion was later used by his brother William IV
and their niece, Queen Victoria. Dinner in hotel.
Mon. May 23 Salisbury
Breakfast in hotel. Coach to Salisbury. Free afternoon in Salisbury to
explore this cathedral city with the tallest spire in England, visit
Mompesson House where part of Emma Thompson's film Sense and
Sensibility was filmed and stroll around the cathedral precincts.
Dinner in hotel.
Tue. May 24 Bristol,
Salisbury
Coach to Bristol. Guide Friday tour of the city including a visit to the
Georgian House, an 18th century building, home of a merchant who traded
in the West Indies. The house gives a good sense of the life of the
mercantile classes of the period and the trade that supported that
lifestyle as evidenced in Mansfield Park. Return to Salisbury.
Dinner in hotel.
Wed. May 25
Winchester, Salisbury
Breakfast in hotel. Coach to Chawton Cottage, a 17th century house which
was the home of Jane Austen from 1809 till her death in 1817 and where
she wrote Pride and Predudice and Emma; graves of her
mother and sister, Cassandra, are in the nearby church yard of St.
Nicholas; take tea at Cassandra's Cup Tearoom. Coach to Winchester.
Visit Jane Austen's grave in the cathedral. Return to Salisbury. Dinner
in hotel.
Thu. May 26 Lyme
Regis, Salisbury
Breakfast in hotel. Coach to seaside town of Lyme Regis - a delightful
seaside town in a dramatic setting, whose harbor wall, the cobb, figures
prominently in a key scene in Persuasion. Return to Salisbury.
Dinner in hotel.
Fri. May 27 Bath, Salisbury
Breakfast in hotel. Coach to Bath-site of a number of scenes from Jane
Austen's novels. Take a Guide Friday bus tour (participants can get on
and off the bus at will to visit the Pump Room, the Roman Bath, the
Assembly Rooms (which includes
the Museum of Costume) and Bath's famous Royal Crescent; entrance fees
to the Roman Baths and the Pump Room are included. Return to Salisbury.
Dinner in hotel.
Sat. May 28 Stonehenge, Salisbury
Breakfast in hotel. Coach to Stonehenge in the morning. Coach to
Chatsworth House in the afternoon – home of the Duke of Devonshire, and
possibly the model for Pemberley in Pride and Predudice. The rest
of the day on your own in Salisbury. Dinner in hotel.
Sun. May 29 Return to USA
Breakfast in hotel. Coach to Heathrow and return to USA.
