LANDSCAPE TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM : Joel Hafner credits his education at Montgomery College with helping him move up to president of Fine Earth Landscape. Now he's giving back by helping out students in the landscape technology program.
SCIENCE, ENGINEERING & MATHEMATICS : Montgomery College plays a critical role in educating the engineers and scientists of tomorrow, so the College brought together national and regional leaders in education, industry, government and business to discuss the challenges and to envision solutions. Former CEO and chair of Lockheed Martin - Norman Augustine - co-hosted the all-day forum.
MC ALERT : Montgomery College has teamed up with the County's Homeland Security Department to offer an emergency text messaging and e-mail service to students and the college community. Montgomery College will activate Montgomery College ALERT in the event of a potentially life-threatening emergency situation at one of the college's three campuses.
PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATION : Dr. Brian Johnson has kept very busy since becoming the college's president in February 2007. In his first year, Dr. Johnson met often with students, faculty and staff. He participated in student award ceremonies and welomed special guests to the college. He has also gone out into the community to meet with local government and business leaders. Dr. Johnson spelled out his vision for the college's future at an inauguration ceremony to commemorate his installation as president. In his inaugural address, Dr. Johnson called for increasing communication at the college, creating a culture of social responsibility, and addressing the state's workforce needs.
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN KICKOFF : To help the college meet its growing needs, the Montgomery College Foundation launched a public two-year campaign to raise 25 million dollars in private support. The funds raised will support student access through scholarships faculty excellence, the improvement or construction of facilities, and the creation of innovative programs and new curricula. The Foundation recently completed a two-year silent phase of the campaign, which resulted in more than $17 million in support of Montgomery College.
CELEBRATING THE CONSTITUTION : State Senator Jamie Raskin has a true passion for the Constitution, working as a constitutional law professor at American University. He shared his thoughts about constitutional patriotism during a visit to Montgomery College, sponsored by the college's Paul Peck Institute for American Culture and Civic Engagement.
LT. GOVERNOR VISIT : Maryland Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown stopped by the Rockville Campus to meet with local business leaders. While there, he joined Montgomery College President Brian Johnson and Rockville Provost Judy Ackerman on a tour of the campus. The Lt. Governor and Governor Martin O'Malley see community colleges as playing a vital role in workforce creation.
UNITY AND DIVERSITY : For the first time, the talents of all the fine arts faculty members were on display in an exhibit at the Glenview Mansion Art Gallery in the Rockville Civic Center Park. Named "Unity and Diversity," the exhibit featured paintings, drawings, photography, and sculpture. Virginia Mecklenburg, senior curator at the Smithsonian American Art Museum , curated the event.
ROCKVILLE CROSS COUNTRY: Michael Brown takes a look at a successful season for the Cross Country team, which placed second in the 2007 Region XX MD JUCO Men's Cross Country Championships. The team placed four runners in the top ten at regionals.
ROCKVILLE MEN'S SOCCER : Finally, Michael Brown profiles this year's successful Men's Soccer team, which took home the Region XX Soccer Tournament Championship, an came within one victory of the national Final Four.
