Montgomery College to Hold Public Meeting Monday, Feb. 13 on Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus Expansion Project

Montgomery College will hold a community meeting on Monday, February 13, at 7 p.m., to provide an update on the current designs and construction for the expansion project underway at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus.  The meeting will be held in the Bliss Room of the Commons Building, 7600 Takoma Avenue, Takoma Park, Md.

Montgomery College is in the middle of a three-phase expansion project at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus.  In January 2004, the College opened the new Health Sciences Center on Georgia Avenue in south Silver Spring.  The 98,000 square foot facility is home to the College's health sciences programs, a business training center, and a health center operated by Holy Cross Hospital.  A pedestrian bridge was added to connect the original campus with the Health Sciences Center located across the CSX/WMATA train tracks.

The second building in the project, a Student Services Center, is currently under construction at the intersection of New York Avenue and Fenton Street.  Slated to open this year, the facility will house admissions, registration, computer labs, a cafeteria, bookstore, and other student services.

Another part of the current expansion project is the renovation that is now underway on the former Giant bakery, located at King Street and Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring.  The building will become the King Street Art Center, with an art gallery, classroom studios, offices and studio space for community artists.  The Department of Visual Arts at the College’s Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus and the School of Art and Design at Montgomery College will move into the center once it is complete in 2007.

The final phase of the expansion project will be a new Cultural Arts Center at Georgia Avenue and East-West Highway.  The center, scheduled for groundbreaking late this year and completion in 2008, will include a 500-seat theater, a small theater with 125 seats, and a glass-walled dance studio.  The venue will be used for class instruction as well as college and community performances.
