Montgomery College-Rockville Women’s Tennis Team Wins National Championship in Tucson, Arizona
Team Captures NJCAA Division III for Second Time in School History

The Montgomery College-Rockville Women’s Tennis Team captured the 2006 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Championship this week in Tucson, Arizona. Coached by Bob Finney, the team defeated seven other colleges, including the reigning national champions from Mercer County Community College, New Jersey, by one point. This marks the team’s second national championship title in the team’s history. The team last won in 2001.

“I’m incredibly proud of the team,” said Bob Finney, Montgomery College-Rockville women’s tennis coach. “We knew going out to Arizona would be tough in the heat and sun. In those conditions, it comes down to mental toughness and character and our players proved themselves to have great character.”

At the tournament, Montgomery College-Rockville had four players in the final matches—Jillian Elkaim, No. 2 singles; Daniela Tirado, No. 3 singles; Inderjeet Kaur, No. 4 singles; and Daniela Tirado and My Chi, No. 2 doubles. Kaur won her match 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the Division III No. 4 national championship title.

Player Jillian Elkaim competed in the longest match of the tournament, clocking in at 4 hours and 23 minutes, in 100 degree heat, before falling in the match, 7-5; 6-7(5); 7-5. Anne-Gaelle Laplanche and Franchesca Martone made it to the semi-finals in their matches.

The Montgomery College-Rockville women’s tennis team earned their spot in the national tournament by previously securing the NJCAA Region XX championship.
