Montgomery College Summer Dinner Theatre Serves Up Blockbusters
Students to Bring ‘Evita,’ ‘Disney’s Beauty and the Beast’ to Stage This Summer

This summer, Montgomery College will bring two acclaimed musicals to the stage—“Evita” and “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast”—for its Summer Dinner Theatre performances, starting June 20. “Evita” performances will take place June 20-21, 27-29 and July 5-6. “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast” will run July 18-19, 25-27 and August 1-3.

The first production, “Evita,” is the musical about Eva Peron, the charismatic wife of Argentina’s dictator. The story follows her meteoric rise from poverty to her status as the country’s most powerful woman. Combining a mixture of jazz, Latin and pop, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s score is highlighted by the signature hit, “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina.”

The second show of the season will be the timeless story of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.” It started out as an Academy Award-winning animated movie, but nothing was lost in its translation to a Broadway musical. The story remains filled with magic, romance and suspense for audiences of all ages. The musical includes all of the songs from the film as well as new ones written for the stage.

Montgomery College’s Summer Dinner Theatre is an annual training ground for both aspiring musical theatre performers and behind-the-scenes artists. Student performers audition for roles and technicians apply for production work. Performers include Montgomery College theatre and music majors, visiting students who study during the year at various universities, talented high school students, and members of the community. Those chosen to participate enroll at Montgomery College for 10 weeks of hands-on education in everything from singing and dancing, to costumes and lighting.

For some students, Summer Dinner Theatre marks the first time they have worked alongside professionals to learn the craft of acting and theatre production. And in a true dinner theatre fashion, the students also serve as waiters at the performances.

Tickets for Summer Dinner Theatre are $37 for adults and $27 for children ages 12 and under. Prices include the performance and a full dinner buffet. At Friday and Saturday night performances, the doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with a show time of 8:15 p.m. On Sunday, the buffet will open at 12:30 p.m., with a 2:15 p.m. show time.

All performances are held in the Theatre Arts Arena on the College’s Rockville Campus, located at 51 Mannakee Street, Rockville, Md. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.montgomerycollege.edu/sdt or call 240-567-7676.
