Montgomery College Trustees Hire Firm to Guide Presidential Search Process
Board Also Names Search Committee Made Up of Faculty, Staff, Students, Community Members

(Rockville, Maryland)—The Montgomery College Board of Trustees has approved the selection of an executive search firm and appointed a presidential search committee to assist the board in its hiring of a new president to head the community college, a multi-campus institution in Montgomery County, Maryland. The Board is seeking a successor to Dr. Charlene R. Nunley, who has been president of Montgomery College since 1999, but announced earlier this year her plans to retire from the College, once a new president has been hired.

The Board has selected the Academic Search Consultation Service, a nonprofit group located in Washington, D.C., as its search consultant. Academic Search has experience in presidential and senior level search for universities and colleges, including two-year colleges. This month, the Academic Search team has been conducting a series of listening sessions to help develop a profile that will guide the search. The profile will be ultimately approved by the Board and the search committee, and will become the primary candidate recruitment and selection tool.

The search committee is charged with developing the presidential search profile, assisting in the national search, screening and reviewing applications, interviewing applicants, and making candidate recommendations to the Board. After the profile is completed, a national search will be launched and applications will be accepted, beginning in July. The committee is expected to begin its review of applicants in September and has been charged by the Board of Trustees with providing a list of 3-5 candidates, by December, for the Board’s final review and selection, which is tentatively scheduled for January 2007.

Montgomery College faculty, staff, students, members of the Board of Trustees, and community members make up the presidential search advisory committee. Dr. Robert E. Shoenberg, a member of the Board of Trustees, will lead the committee as chair. The committee members are: Lon Anderson, alumnus; Dr. Arlene Blaylock, senior research analyst; Kathleen Carey-Fletcher, director of auxiliary services; Dr. Sonya Chiles, professor of criminal justice; Gene W. Counihan, Board member; Dr. Stewart Edelstein, executive director of the Universities at Shady Grove; Douglas Firstenberg, Montgomery College Foundation board member; Charles Haughey, Montgomery County Board of Education president; Gail Jenkins, professor of biology; Teneriffe Mapp, student; Dr. Owen D. Nichols, Board member; Olukemi Onigbinde, student; Lauren Payne, student; Dr. Hercules Pinkney, vice president and provost of the Germantown Campus; Dr. Atul N. Roy, professor of math; Claudia Salas of the College’s Workforce Development and Continuing Education division; Roberta F. Shulman, Board of Trustees member; Laura White of the College’s Workforce Development and Continuing Education division; Teresa Wright of Montgomery County Public Schools; and Harry Zarin, an associate professor of counseling at the College.
