Susan Hoffman, a professor of theatre at Montgomery College’s Rockville Campus, received the Education Award at the seventh annual Montgomery County Executive's Awards for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities, held Monday at the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda.

The event, hosted by Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett and his wife Catherine, honored seven awardees and the recipients of grants in the arts and humanities.

Professor Hoffman has taught in the Department of Speech, Dance, and Theatre for 38 years and has chaired the department for the past 16 years. She has directed numerous productions during the academic year for the Montgomery College Performing Arts Series and has taught courses in acting, directing, and speech communication.

She has contributed to the educational development of more than 5,500 students and has witnessed the successful careers built by many of her former students. She has even assisted a number of County residents in pursuing professional careers in film, television, and regional theatre. Brad Oscar, Susan Carson, and Barbara Walsh are among the successful Broadway performers who were trained at the Summer Dinner Theatre at Montgomery College.

More than 95,000 attendees have attended the 62 productions of Summer Dinner Theatre, with two productions offered each summer for 31 years. Participants have included 2,600 students from Montgomery College, local high schools, other colleges and universities, and community members.
