Rockville Campus Expansion Task Force Meeting

Summary of November 15, 2006 meeting:

Reviewed task force charge – the scope of the task force is to explore expansion options keeping in mind the limitations of Rockville campus space. 

· Increasing capacity

· Changing the footprint

· New buildings – more space

· Looking beyond actual physical footprint for more space – which could lead to reallocation of current space

Suggestions at last meeting included:

· More interaction in committee meeting –will be provided at this meeting

· Tour of Rockville campus – is being arranged for December

· Website for easily accessible information – has been set up

The Campus Master Plan deals with current buildings.  It is a vision of the ideal campus through 2012, but many recommendations will not be implemented in that time.  This committee is looking for long-term but temporary solutions to the space deficit that presently exists and to accommodate future growth.

The group then split into groups of 4 to discuss options.  At the end of about 30 minutes each group had 5 minutes to present its list of options, and the entire group asked clarification questions.  The planning committee will organize and combine the lists, and they will be available on the committee website.  (Click here for the complete list.)

Next Meeting:

At the next meeting of the Task Force on January 10, 2007, we will discuss the ideas generated tonight and narrow them down to 5-7 options.  Suggestions for maximizing use of time for evaluating options:

· Provide more detail about options

· People who have information (where properties are located, size, restrictions, owners) should send it to Carolyn Terry.

· Large map or aerial photo

· Representatives from Germantown & Takoma Park (?)

· Need to include concerns – traffic, safety, etc.

· Retain professional to do property search/review?

Action Items – Next Steps

By January 10 we can start narrowing the list of options.  Committee members should continue to submit ideas to Carolyn Terry as they come up.

· Each organization will have one voice

· Committee members will receive tour information soon

· The Executive Committee will prepare a document/report from the committee – members who wish to serve on this subgroup should contact Ms. Terry.  (We have representatives from community groups.)

· All committee members are encouraged to use the website and listserv for communication
