Planning to Transfer for Fall 2009?  The Time to Apply is NOW!

Students who want to transfer to four-year colleges next fall should try to finish admissions applications and financial aid forms by this March 1, 2009.

  • But the deadline says “July 1”... or April 1... or August 1!  Yes, many schools publish later deadlines than March 1 for fall transfer, but the preferred deadline for maximum consideration is March 1.  Check with each school for transfer application requirements.  Will it be too late after March 1?  Not always – some schools continue to admit students until they run out of space, but your chances of acceptance improve with an earlier application.

  • Are you a true Transfer Student?  You usually are if you’ve earned 30 transferable credits.  This means that at the time you apply, you have 30 completed courses and grades showing on your transcript. The actual number varies by school, but the general rule is 30.  A school like UMCP wants to see completion of college-level math and English as part of the 30 or more credits.  Check with each school to find out who is a "transfer student."  At many schools, if you meet the definition of a transfer student, then you may not be asked to submit your high school record and SAT scores.  This varies by school – check transfer admissions guidelines.
  • What if you don’t have 30 credits completed?  Most schools will ask to see your high school record and SAT scores in addition to a transcript of your grades from MC.  If this makes you panic, be aware that colleges will put more weight on your MC transcript than on your SAT/hs record – so even if you weren’t admissible to a school while you were a senior in high school, if your college grades are good, transfer acceptance may be possible.  Schools want to know that you have the ability to perform well at the college-level and are less interested in your high school past.
  • I took some developmental courses the first semester – Will they be enough to show my ability to work in college?  Often, four-year schools like to see that you’ve taken college-level English and math.  Schools that want more evidence of your academic ability may ask for mid-term and final grades from this Spring 2009 before making a decision.  It could be that staying an additional semester at MC (next Fall) and transferring in the Spring would make you a stronger candidate for transfer.  Meet with a counselor at MC to discuss this if you’re in doubt.
  • Paper or on-line?  Most schools prefer on-line applications.  If the school offers an on-line application, use it.
Do I have to submit an essay?  Some schools have an optional essay, at others, it’s a requirement.  In any case, complete the essay – it shows your genuine interest and willingness to work.  Search with Google - “writing college essays” for guidelines and tips, but do NOT pay for an essay writing service.  Counselors, English professors and the Writing Centers here at MC will look over essays if you ask for assistance.  Definitely have someone read over your final draft before you submit it.
Tips from the College Board
  • How do I send MC transcripts?  Request a copy of your current transcript to go with your application in March.  Transcript request forms are at the Admissions Office – fill out the form and pay the $5.00 fee per request.  Write out the address of the school as per the admissions application instructions.
TRANSCRIPTS -  WHAT ARE THEY AND WHY SHOULD I CARE?

What is a transcript?  A transcript is an official copy of a student's academic record. It records all courses successfully and unsuccessfully completed and all courses attempted ("withdrawals").  Midterm grades do not appear, only final grades.  Transcripts show your official grade point average (GPA) and the number of credits you have earned.

How do I request a copy of my transcript?  This link will take you to the three methods:  web, mailed in request, or walk-in request.  A fee of $5 is charged for each official transcript requested.  www.montgomerycollege.edu/admissions/Records/TranscriptRequests.htm

What are electronic transcripts?  Montgomery College sends copies of transcripts electronically to most Maryland public schools.  This system is very efficient - the information is sent somewhat like a fax, eliminating paper copies, and transcript information is downloaded right into a student's application file.  You don't have to request an electronic transcript - if you ask MC to send a transcript to a Maryland public school, it will automatically go as an electronic, not a paper, copy.

Is it better to include a copy of my paper transcript with my application package, or have MC send it for me?
Some programs will specifically instruct you to include an official copy of your transcript with your paper application (especially scholarship programs).  If you don't see this specific request, then having MC send it for you is the best way to go.

What if I my transcript arrives before my application gets there?  This is not a problem for either paper or electronic transcripts.  Transfer institutions usually recognize that a student's application will soon follow - they typically hold onto transcripts for 6 months to wait for the rest to arrive.

What's the difference between an official and an unofficial transcript?   An official transcript, in paper form, has been imprinted with MC's official stamp and it is sealed in an envelope.  Opening the envelope means that it is no longer official.  Electronic transcripts sent from MC to the transfer school are official.  Get an unofficial transcript from your MyMC account - this is a printout of your courses and grades by semester.  Even if you have sent an official transcript to your transfer school, it's always a good idea to print out your unofficial transcript from MyMC and bring it to any information sessions or orientation/advising sessions at other schools.

Aren't schools more impressed if I hand-carry a copy of my transcript to their admissions offices?   Can you picture an overflowing "In Box" at a popular university?  Paper copies take time for someone to open it up and enter the data in the system.  Electronic is the way to go for a MD state school.

If I send an official copy of my transcript when I apply to a university, will MC also send my final transcript?  MC doesn't have a way of knowing which school you will decide to attend - you must request a second copy of your final transcript at the end of a semester.  For example, if you want to become a Frostburg Bobcat next Fall 2009 and you've sent one transcript in February of 2009, you'll need to request another copy at the end of the Spring semester so that those earned grades and credits can be reviewed and transferred to FSU.

"I LOST $3,000 WORTH OF AID BECAUSE I MISSED THE MARCH 1 DEADLINE!"

This is a true quote from a Montgomery College student - he qualified for Maryland State scholarships and aid, but applied on March 2 of last year... a day too late.

If you want to apply for financial aid OR scholarships for next Fall 2009, you need to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by MARCH 1 for maximum consideration.

Unsure about where
you’ll end up?  List all the schools that interest you on the FAFSA.  Taxes not done yet and parental units objecting to filling out the form now?  That information can be estimated based on the previous year’s information, and amended once taxes have been officially completed.  It’s better to apply by March 1 with an estimation than to wait until April.

  • Even if you DIDN’T qualify for financial aid at MC, don’t assume that you won’t at a more expensive four-year school.  File a free FAFSA and see what happens.  All public 4-year schools cost at least double the tuition of MC, and most private schools are 3 to 5 times more expensive than MC.
  • Scholarships…  It's time to apply!  Four-year schools like to reward bright transfer students.  Look into transfer scholarships on each school’s web page (usually under “financial aid’), and investigate other scholarship opportunities.  Start at the MC Transfer Scholarship Page and go from there…     www.montgomerycollege.edu/Departments/studev/schol.htm
  • What's it going to cost?  See Tuition and Fees at Maryland public institutions here.  Article on the cost of private schools here.

Other Frequently Asked Questions About Transfer

Do I have to have an AA to transfer?   It’s not always necessary to complete an AA before you go, although
completion of an Associates degree can be helpful if:

  • Your overall GPA is  less than a 2.5 – MOST Maryland public schools will accept students who have
completed either an AA or 56 credits if their overall GPA is a 2.0 or higher.  See the Maryland Higher
Education Commission’s Guide to Transfer or ask a counselor.  Of course, your chances of surviving at the next school are better with a higher GPA, aim high.  Here is the Maryland State Transfer Policy:
    www.mhec.state.md.us/preparing/stuguide.asp

  • Your native language is not English UMCP requests that students whose native language is not English either submit TOEFL scores or complete an AA degree to demonstrate their proficiency of English.

  • You want to transfer with junior status – it’s economical to earn as many credits as you can before you go, as long as the courses you’re taking fit your major at your four-year destination.  Why not wrap those 60 credits into an AA degree along the way?  Remember that the key to course transferability is getting advised each semester for help in choosing courses.  Just presenting a completed AA degree does NOT mean that all courses taken will transfer to a four-year school.   Check to see how close you are to earning an AA degree here.

Do I stand a better chance of getting in to a competitive major if I apply as “Undecided’?  Probably not, especially if the University of Maryland, College Park is your destination.  See an MC counselor to discuss this.

Sample Application Tips & Deadlines for Local Transfer Schools

The University of Maryland, College Park guarantees transfer admission to students who have 30 credits completed under the provisions of the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program (see below).

NEW - UM now has two full-time Pre-Transfer Advisers waiting to help you with your transfer questions.  Contact them through www.transferadvising.umd.edu/

  • Priority Deadline for Fall 2009 Transfer: March 1 (priority date), June 1 (final date)

  • The Optional Essay ... DO NOT neglect it.  UMCP increasingly looks at this essay when students are applying to Limited Enrollment Programs (competitive majors).  This is also an excellent place to mention any of the following things:

    • You had a rough start or dip in semester grades

    • The fact that you'll complete an Associate's Degree this May or over the Summer 2009 - especially important for students who indicate that English is not their first language.  Students in this situation will be asked to submit TOEFL scores to show English proficiency, except in cases where they have A's in both EN 101 & 102/109 and an overall GPA of 3.75 or higher.

  • If an essay is optional at ANY school, just do it!

SHENANDOAH UNIVERSITY TRANSFER STUDENT OPEN HOUSE

It is with great pleasure that I would like to announce that Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia will be holding its first Transfer Student Open House on Friday, March 20, 2009 from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. This type of event is long overdue but will hopefully be one of the many steps we utilize from here on out to assist your students.

During the Open House, students will view a presentation about our Transfer Admissions policies and financial aid options. They will also have the opportunity to meet with the Admissions Counselor who works with their academic program. These sessions will be especially useful to those interested in the health professions as the counselors will discuss the prerequisites needed for each particular program.

For students who bring an official copy of their college transcript(s), they may have the opportunity to be accepted on the spot! On-site acceptances will only be made for students who bring sealed, official copies of transcripts of the schools they’ve attended. Shortly after the Open House, the students who brought transcripts will receive transfer credit evaluations from the Office of Admissions so they know exactly how their courses transfer to SU.

Registration for the Transfer Open House is now open and can be completed online at http://www.su.edu/admissions/oh_.cfm.

Stump the Transfer Advisor!

Dear Transfer Advisor,

I love Montgomery College and to be honest, I really don't want to leave.  I've heard a rumor that MC is going to offer four-year degrees, is this true?

Maria Montgomery

Dear Maria,

If we had a nickel for every time counselors have heard this question... well, you may have seen the pile of nickels on my desk.

MC will not be offering four-year, bachelor's degrees in the known future.  HOWEVER, the good news is that you CAN earn a four-year degree while staying in Montgomery County through the Universities at Shady Grove.  http://www.shadygrove.umd.edu/programs/undergraduate/   Nine different universities offer the programs below at the Shady Grove Campus, located at the intersection of Shady Grove Road and Route 28, just past Shady Grove Hospital.  If you enroll in one of these programs, your diploma will read, "Towson University" or whichever school offers the program, not "Universities at Shady Grove."  There are many exciting majors offered, check them out!

Undergraduate (Bachelor's Degree) Majors at Shady Grove include:
